What is lumbar microdiscectomy?

Several patients complain of lower back pain radiating down the legs along with a sensation of tingling and numbness (referred to as sciatic pain). This is attributed to the herniation of the inter-vertebral disc material on to the spinal cord, resulting in compression of the nerve root. It is a minimal invasive surgery in which, a part of the lumbar vertebra is dissected to relive the pressure on the underlying nerve tissue.
