Avoid Bulging Disc Lower Back Pain - Tips For Working Horizontally

If you suffer from a bulging disc, gravity is your worst enemy. The more time you spend letting gravity compress your spine during the day, the worse the pain will be. If you can take the pressure off the bulging disc, your body will be able to repair the disc quicker. Studies have shown that sitting puts more pressure on the spine than standing. Even better is lying down. When you lie down, the pressure caused by gravity is removed from the spinal column. Could this be a key to getting relief from back pain?

If you could spend less time sitting and standing and more time lying down, would that reduce your pain? How about working whilst lying down? You might think that working whilst lying down is impossible and for some professions, you are quite correct. For instance, if you are a supermarket clerk, then scanning groceries whilst lying on the floor might be fun but it is not very practical. However, there are some professions and tasks for which working on the floor is not an issue.

Reading
Reading is one of the easiest tasks to perform on floor level. The best position for your bulging disc or painful lower back is on your back. Have a small pillow under your head and have a few pillows under your legs. Alternatively, you could just place your legs on a chair. If you suffer from bulging disc pain, placing your calves on a chair will take even more pressure of your disc. By reducing the pressure on the disc, you allow it to heal quicker.

Computer Work
If you slave away in front of a computer all day, then you are in luck. Working with a laptop from the floor is a great relief from sitting on a chair. For now, please ignore the fact that working in front of a computer probably gave you the problems with your back in the first place. Instead, focus on how lucky you are - you can ease your back pain by lying down a few hours every day.

What To Think About
In order to be comfortable and not create more problems for yourself, you need to be careful. Make sure you have something soft to lie on. A camping mat is perfect as this will also shield your body from a potentially cold floor. Then, in order to save your neck and shoulders, you need to have one or several pillows under your body. There are illustrative pictures on the blog linked below.

One of the biggest dangers is to rest your head for just a minute. You can easily fall a sleep and be accused of sleeping on the job. To reduce the risk of falling asleep, keep water or coffee within reach. Plenty of fluid will force you to run to the bathroom now and then, preventing you from being too comfortable.
